Scunthorpe 1st XV 14 – Macclesfield 66
On a bright day at Heslam Park we hosted Macclesfield for the 1st time.
There were a few changes to the Scunthorpe side, with Lewis Talbot on the wing and Laurence Pearce in the centre both returning after injury, there were also some changes in the forwards with Ben Hyde pulling out during the warm up which brought in Rory Rendall-Tyrell from the bench.
A minute’s silence was observed in the prematch.
Macclesfield kicked off towards the Queensway end. As ever the game started apace and after Macclesfield pressure, the Greens gave away a couple of penalties which brought Macclesfield a line out in on the five metre line, a well executed catch & drive saw the Macclesfield hooker Olly Longmore score the first try Scunthorpe 0 Macclesfield 5.
The Greens went back into the game after carrying the ball into the Macclesfield half who were then penalised for being offside, the Greens kicked for the corner, from the line out the Greens win the line out and carry the ball forward before letting the ball come out to Jack Leggate who scores the try converted by Will Dark.
Scunthorpe 7 Maccelsfield 5.
Macclesfield soon back in the ascendancy, with some slick handling and the ball going through numerous pairs of hands before a a ruck was formed 3 metres out, the ball picked up by the tight head prop Andy Darlington who went over for the 2nd try. This was converted by Harry Oliver.
Scunny 7 Macclesfield 12.
The Greens eventually regained the ball after the kickoff, the game still playing apace, Macclesfield are caught offside and the Greens kick from corner, Scunthorpe win the line out and tie in the Macclesfield defence only for them to be penalised again for straying offside.
5 metres out, the Greens catch and drive and after a couple of attempts at the line, the ball comes out of the back of maul and into the hands of Will Robinson who scores the try converted by Will Dark.
Scunthorpe 14 Mac 12.
Macclesfield were soon back on the attack but some good defence by the Greens kept Macclesfield out.
After a couple of drives at the line, Macclesfield are then held up over the line. From the goal line dropout the Greens were soon under pressure again with Macclesfield scoring a try through their full back Dan Leake. Converted by Harry Oliver.
Scunthorpe 14 Macclesfield 19 32 mins.
The Greens then back in the ascendancy attacking, before the ball went into touch. Unfortunately the Greens lose the ball at the line out and Macclesfield clear their lines.
The Greens back on attack and make good ground into the Macclesfield 22. Macclesfield win the line out and play out, the ball going from side to side across the park, they then win a quick ruck and swiftly get the ball into the hands of Manu Shute the winger to go under the posts to score the try. Converted by Harry Oliver.
Scunny 14 Mac 26 38 mins.
The score remained the same until half time.
The Greens kickoff the second half down towards the Queensway end, Macclesfield take the ball and run at the Greens and appear to cut easily through the defence to score under the posts
Scunthorpe 15 Macclesfield 33.
The Greens just about held their own for a short period before Macclesfield broke out again and seemingly handled with ease the Greens struggling to defend, Slick ball handling by them and the Greens doing their best to defend could stop a well drilled Macclesfield team always having a player on the shoulder of a tackled player and offloading.
Score tries regularly on 50 mins, 57 mins, 63 mins 70 mins and 77 mins. 4 of these converted
Scunthorpe 14 Macclesfield 66. Full time.
MoM Lewis Talbot
A heavy defeat against a very good Macclesfield team, certainly one of the best seen at Heslam Park for a long time. The Greens held their own for 30 mins and just need to pull themselves together ready for a short trip to table toppers Sheffield.

Mosborough 20 – Scunthorpe Stags 24
Scunthorpe Stags were back in League action this week when they visited the South Yorkshire side Mosborough in the Counties 2 Midlands East (North) Division.
It was the big home side forwards that scored first after 3 minutes, the try came from a scrum close to the Scunthorpe line, the Mosborough pack drove them back and the try was claimed. The conversion was missed, 5-0.
The Stags were looking very lacklustre and found it difficult to get going. However, they brushed off the cobwebs and surged into action with a brilliant try on 11 min from Will Horner, it came from a breakout from their own 22, Jack Murr made 50m dodging left then right beating defenders at will, He fed his co-centre Horner who was clear to run into the corner to score. Henry Dawson converted a difficult kick, 5-7.
Two minutes later Dawson converted a penalty to stretch the lead to 5-10.
A second try followed quickly as the Stags were now on fire, It was stalwart second row Jimmy Lovell who collected the five pointer after superb running rugby from the whole team, the Stags stole a line out then broke free, Alfie Oldridge made inroads, kept the ball alive then good approach work from Will Horner and they ended up deep in the opposition 22.
Mosborough cleared for a line out, good support play from all 15 saw Lovell over the line, it was converted by Henry Dawson, 5-17.
On half an hour the home side came back with their second try, it came from a charge down, the ball popped up to No 6 Ciaran Lockett who strolled over, the conversion was missed.
Five minutes later the South Yorkshire boys were level at 17-17.
‘Mos’ were on the drive when a great tackle from Kier Gosling halted their tracks, however the player off-loaded and the full back Dale Abey jinked through to feed Lockett who claimed his brace, this time the try was converted.
Just before half time skipper Billy Hardy scored another exhilarating try, it came from another mesmerising run from ace centre Jack Murr, he broke through dodging left and right then like a good scrum half should Hardy was in support to score wide of the left-hand post.
Henry Dawson had his kicking boots on and converted to take the lead 17-24 at the break, the first half saw some excellent, yet contrasting styles of rugby from the two sides. However, the second half became a dour affair.
Five minutes in, Mosborough accepted an easy penalty chance arising from a high tackle to get within a score of winning at 20-24. What followed was a string of mistakes from both sides, some injuries and two sides not really prepared to repeat the open play of the first period.
On display were two good teams going hammer and tongs for 30 minutes with very little advantage gained from either team.
In essence they nullified each other and the Stags did well in defence to prevent any further scoring to win a well-deserved and hard-fought encounter 20-24.
Next week the Stags host Sheffield 2 at Heslam Park in a friendly against a club with a first team riding high in National 2 North.

GRIMSBY 5 – SCUNTHORPE DEVS 66
The Development team took the short trip up to play local rivals Grimsby and hope to go back to winning ways after last weeks lost to Goole.
The game was underway and it was Scunthorpe who started off the better team, they retained the ball well and saw themselves within a couple of metres from the tryline, A line busting run from Gui Abreu saw him dive over and get his first of the match.
Scunthorpe would continue to pile on the pressure against their local rivals and it would be too much to contain as the returning Matthew Henton breaks through Grimsby defence and scores his first try.
Minutes later Scunthorpe would score again and it would be Gui on the double, A miskick from Grimsbygave Scunthorpe a lineout on the 5 metre, Phil Jepson collected the ball and offloaded it to Liam Barrett who passed it to Gui and he broke through the defence again and scored his second of the match.
Scunthorpe were searching for their bonus point and put the game to bed before the second half even begun, some good forward momentum created by the forwards dragged the Grimsby defence in and left the backs completely free, a crossfield kick from Rick Robbo saw the ball bounce into the arms of Phil Wood who scores Scunthorpes 4th.
Second half was underway and the penalty count went against Scunthorpe, this put Grimsby inches away from their first points of the game, even though Scunthorpe defended well it would be their own player Ben Dealtry to score for Grimsby, the fine committee are currently discussing the severity of this try.
What came next was scrums galore as neither team could seem to forget how to catch the ball. However Scunthorpe would answer with some quick tries from Dante Salvatore-Chapman, Oliver Gregory, Matthew Henton and Rob White saw Scuinthorpe take a comfortable win and the bragging rights back to Heslam Park.
Special thank yous go to the players who played for Grimsby and kept the game competitive throughout.
MOM- Dante, 1st game back 4 tries scored.
