MANSFIELD 12 – SCUNTHORPE 24

Scunthorpe travelled to Mansfield on a sunny Sunday afternoon, we knew this would be the crunch match of the remaining fixtures with Mansfield sitting at the top of the league currently.

The game started at a frantic pace and some strong running from the Scunthorpe forwards allowed clean ball to be distributed to the backs.

Ewa got on the scoreboard very quickly with one of her two tries after a well worked kick bounced in her favour after a fantastic chase 💪

This continued for the first half where Scunthorpe overwhelmed Mansfield and scored some well worked tries from Cassie and another from Ewa.

It took a lot of battling from Mansfield to keep a grasp on the game.

At the break the score was 21-0, Scunthorpe continually pressured their attack into the second half; but it was Mansfield that scored first in the second half and converted.

Cassie continued her great kicking game and this persistently pinned back Mansfield and their attack return was quickly met with eager Scunthorpe defenders.

Scunthorpe opted for a penalty kick to the posts this meant they would need to score 3 times . Mansfield scored again before the end but failed to convert.

The team is going from strength to strength and the hard work is paying off !

2nd TEAM

SCUNTHORPE 19 – TUPTON 8

The Stags were looking to do the double on Tupton after a gruelling fixture away in Derbyshire back in November.

Scunthorpe got off like a house on fire with Alfie Taylor playing out of his skin for the first twenty minutes, it was the mobile prop who scored the opening try after 10 minutes.

Tupton came back with some strong running but gave away a penalty which was kicked to the corner, the line out worked well, and the ball was recycled a couple of times, Billy Hardy moved it left and a weaving run from Taylor saw him score a good individual try.

After twenty minutes Tupton were given a kickable penalty and it was slotted over by fly half Sam Cooper, 7-3.

Three minutes later Coel Gosling scored a good back rowers try, it came from another penalty to Scunthorpe, Tupton mouthed of at the referee who rightly marched them back 10 metres, this gave Henry Dawson an easier kick deep into the 22, the catch and drive line out worked to a tee, the young flanker peeled off and powered over to score the five-pointer, Henry Dawson missed the extra two, 12-3.

The young fly half made up for it when he scored a lovely individual try, it was the Tupton scrum that shoved their Stags oppos off the ball and took it on but unfortunately, they knocked on, the referee played advantage and the home side had four against two, the ball went wide as Dawson saw the gap, used his pace to scamper over from the 22m line to score, he converted his own try and Scunthorpe were well in control of the game as half time came, they led 19-3.

The second half was a complete contrast to the first and the Stags lost their mojo.

They made a few replacements in the pack, and this dented their momentum, the game turned into a scrappy affair as Tupton continued to question the referee’s decisions. In fact, the ever-vocal 2nd row Harrison was shown to bin as the match official had enough of his advice.

Scunthorpe lost the plot as the game seemed to be drifting away,  they had a couple of chances to get the bonus point try but it just wasn’t to be, the stalemate continued for 30 minutes then Tupton scored a try in the corner which was not converted as the game drew to somewhat underwhelming end.

Next week sees the Stags have a weekend off and then they will host Notts Casuals at Heslam Park.

The first points would come to the home side as the pressure piled up on Leodiensians, a scrum was rewarded to Scunthorpe on the 5 metre line, Scunthorpe dominated and put the away side on the back footk, a quick pick and go from Joe Grimley saw him dive over the line and score the first try of the match, conversion unsuccessful and the score was 5-0.

Scunthorpe looked to get another before half time after numerous penalties by the travelling side saw a penalty given to Scunthorpe in between the sticks, a tap and go from Matthew Henton saw him dive over the line and score Scunthorpes second of the match, conversion successful and the first half ended 12-0 to Scunthorpe.

The second half was under way and Scunthorpe came out firing with Cam James scoring back to back tries to further extend Scunthorpes lead.

Another try cam for the hime side and it would scome from scrum half Liam Barrett as he spotted a gap around the break down and went through to score his first of the match, conversion was successful.

Leodiensians would grab a consolation try as Scunthorpe would start to concede a few penalties a quick tap and go saw the travelling side tear through Scunthorpes defence and they ran in to score their first try of the match.

Scunthorpe would answer back quickly and it would be Harry Soulby who scores basically a carbon cut copy of his first, Scunny find themselves inches from the line, Harry powered himself through and dived over to score his second of the match.

The final try cam from Kian Ellor, A lineout taken by the travelling team on their own 5 metre line saw the 9 throw a hospital pass that was read and intercepted by Kian who dived over to score the final try of the match.
