SCUNTHORPE 34 – Gainsborough- 17
The 3rd team were back in action and welcomed local rivals Gainsborough.
The match was underway and after a couple of phases the ball was knocked on by Scunthorpe, Gainsborough then collect the ball and score seconds after the whistle was blown to get the game started, the home side see themselves seven points down in the first minute.
Scunthorpe woke up and brought the game to Gainsborough through some strong carries Gainsborough saw themselves defending their try line, a Gap spotted by Charley Aitkenhead opened up and he ran through to then offload the ball to the returning Gavin Drewry who dives over to score, the extra points were kicked and the score was level.
The home side was not done there when Adam Wilson played a pass to Sam Fischer who beat off multiple defenders and kept himself in play to score in the corner, conversion was unsuccessful and Scunny were up by 5.
Straight from the restart the thrid team wanted another try and it would come from Adam Wilson, after setting the last one up he timed his run well to get through the defence and ran around the winger to finish under the post, Adam then tried to hit his own conversion but did his best rendition of the crossbar challenge instead.
The contest became a bit of a stalemate after with neither side giving an inch and the ref blew for half-time with Scunthorpe leading at the break 17-7.
The second half was underway and it would be Scunthorpe who would grab the next points, the ball became loose from Gainsborough’s breakdown, Ross Burnett offloads the ball to Josh Duggan who ran through Gainsborughs defence to score, Josh then shows Adam how to kick under the post and gets the extra 2 points to make the socre 24-7.
Gainsborough brought the fightback and after some strong carries from their forward pack saw Scunthorpes own Reid Clutterbuck dive over to score against Scunthorpe, Conversion was missed and the score was 24-12.
Scunthorpe would answer back as the ball is with Rhys Hampshire who gets passed the winger with a two on one against the full back he kicks the ball through and gifts Adam his second try of the match. Conversion unsuccessful and the score is now 29-12.
Gainsborugh would get their last try of the match after Charley Aitkenhead stripped the ball over the line only for Gainsborugh to win the ball back and score, conversion was unsuccessful and the score was now 29-17.
The home side would get their last try of the match and it would come from Rhys, the winger evaded tackles and ran in to score under the post, he took his own conversion and it was in off the post and Scunthorpe now lead 34-17.
The full time whistle blew and Scunthorpe won the game 34-17.
