SCUNTHORPE 7 – ROSSENDALE 13
On a dank day in Scunthorpe where we have seemingly had rain since the beginning of December.
A few changes to the team after injuries to James Dyson & Josh Lugsden which brought in Tom Davies at full back and Olly Arnold in the back row, Scunthorpe also welcomed back Matthew Probert, a former Greens Mini junior now playing at Rossendale.
The Greens kicked off towards the Queensway end, Rossendale carry the ball with their big forwards, The Greens turned the ball over but a knock on brought a scrum for Rossendale who used these forwards and drove the Greens back for which they were awarded a penalty.
From the penalty Rossendale kicked for the corner, won the line out in the 22 but a turn over enabled the Greens to clear their lines for a further line out to Rossendale on the 22.
Another Green turned over and again cleared up the field, Rossendale came back to be stopped at the 5 metre line, unfortunately the Greens were penalised for a hand in the ruck and a yellow card for Marcus Payne followed, from the tap penalty, a drive by Rossendale and a pick up at the back of the ruck sees the Rossendale 4 Masi Clarke score under the posts, converted by Kieran Tyrer.
Scunthorpe 0 Rossendale 7
The Greens played in the Rossendale half for a long period before losing the ball to a Rossendale turnover, with their large forwards they drive away from their line and a great tackle by Joey Mowbray sees a knock on by Rossendale, The Greens win their scrum, drive forward only to lose the ball and Rossendale again find themselves in the Greens 22.
From a great turn over the Greens kick into the Rossendale half where the full back fails to catch the ball and a kick ahead by Lewis Talbot finds the Greens in prime position in the Rossendale 5 metre area, a couple of quick rucks sees the Greens score a try through Will Dale converted by Will Darke.
Scunthorpe 7 Rossendale 7
The Greens from the kickoff catch the ball and put it through the hands but a knock-on gives Rossendale the scrum on the Greens 10 metre line, from a pick up and drive the Greens defended in their own 22 and a turn over and relieving kick from Ethan Taylor took them up to the halfway.
The line out won by Rossendale drive through into the Scunthorpe 22 with only excellent defence again saves the day.
The half finishes Scunthorpe 7 Rossendale 7.
Rossendale start the 2nd half, Greens catch the ball and make an easy exit for a Rossendale line out, at this point the Greens are now in the ascendancy.
Will Robinson breaks down the left wing on the stand side before being brought down, he sets up the ball and the ball goes across to the other wing, Greens gain another 20m but lose the ball forward, The Greens still worked hard through the forwards but were unable to break the Rossendale resolute defence,
Rossendale then started playing in the Scunthorpe half and with the Greens giving up a number of consecutive penalties one of which the Rossendale fullback Kieran Tyrer kicked for the posts and added 3 points.
Scunthorpe 7 Rossendale 10
From the kick off Rossendale were soon playing in the Scunthorpe half and again won a penalty for holding on. Another kick by Kieran Tyrer nudged Rossendale further ahead.
Scunthorpe 7 Rossendale 13
The Greens try as they might were unable to break down the Rossendale defence and saw the score remain the same to the end of the match.
Scunthorpe 7 Rossendale 13 FT.
A disappointing start to the New Year and there are a number of tougher games ahead starting with Hull Ionians next Saturday.

SCUNTHORPE 25 – SYSTON 2s 28
The Stags were raring to go after a three week break from league rugby.
They welcomed back Elliot Saltmarsh, Jack Murr and Ollie Jepson who were missing when the Stags were trounced away at Syston earlier in the season.
Two minutes in, Syston scored a converted try, after a couple of penalties Syston camped on the Scunthorpe 5m line and eventually their forwards drove over to score under the post number 10 Jack Green kicked the conversion, 0-7.
Scunthorpe line out gained possession, and Jake Goodison put the bomb up for the centres to chase, this resulted in Syston giving away a penalty, Goodison kicked to the corner to go for the lineout 10m out, Scunthorpe had the chance to score and really should’ve done as they were camped on the line for a good five minutes, after a series of penalties unfortunately it all went south as Syston exited their 22 without conceding.
On 24 minutes Jake Goodison had to leave the field injured and shortly afterwards Syston scored their second try. It started at a Scunthorpe scrum when Syston pushed Scunthorpe off the ball to gain possession, a grubber kick from the centre saw a kick-chase and they just managed to score in the corner, the conversion was missed, 0-12.
The Stags were playing well but they were giving away too many penalties and letting Syston off the hook at crucial times.
On 39 minutes Jack Murr scored a great individual try initiated by Elliot Saltmarsh, Saltmarsh picked up from the scrum and fed Jack on the halfway line he dodged and weaved in the mud, he was struggling at the end as the sticky conditions began to tell but he kept on going and just scraped over the line. Henry Dawson took the conversion and added the extra two, 7-12, half time.
Scunthorpe came out of the blocks firing and within two minutes a try from Charlie Aitkenhead levelled the score. This time the Stags made it count as Aitkenhead powered over the score the touchdown,12-12.
Five minutes later Jack Murr scored his second try and Scunthorpe were on top, it came from a great offload which put the young centre through the gap, and he strolled over, Henry Dawson converting, Scunthorpe 19 Syston 12, on the hour Syston scored their third try.
The well drilled side came back on the attack and played well, they forced a couple of penalties and went for lineouts which were working very well, from one such restart the ball came out and from open play fly-half Green chipped to the corner, left winger Greensmith claimed the ball was tackled, but had enough momentum to get over the whitewash. The conversion was missed and the Stags had a slender lead of two points at 19-17.
At 68 minutes Syston went back into the lead with a bonus point try, The Stags were desperately unlucky as they were in the opposition 22, they were attacking with gusto looking to get the win they deserved. They were 10 metres from the line but instead of going to ground to regroup they forced the pass and unfortunately the ball was intercepted by a Syston player who raced 70m to score. This knocked the stuffing out of the home side, 19-22, conversion being missed.
To be fair to both sides the conditions did not prevent either team from playing running rugby, and it was a very combative contest between two very good sides.
Scunthorpe earned a penalty 15m in front of the posts, Skipper Billy Hardy chose the sensible option, and Henry Dawson slotted it over to level at 22-22.
Minutes later another penalty was given in front of the posts a little further out, but once again as cool as you like Dawson slotted it over to nudge the Stags back into the lead, 25-22.
There was little time to go, and Scunthorpe were determined to seal the victory as they attacked the Syston 22, yet another penalty came their way and once again common sense prevailed as they went for goal.
The kick was a little wider than the previous two but well within Dawson’s range.
The three points would ensure that Syston needed a converted try to win in what was now extra time, uncharacteristically the young kicker faded it wide, but the Stags could still hang on for the win.
To rub salt in their wounds Syston did the unthinkable and rallied one last time to score a try in the corner that went unconverted. There were seconds on the clock, and the Leicestershire side saw them out to claim the victory, 25-27, in an excellent game of rugby which could have gone either way.
