WOMEN’S TEAM

SCUNTHORPE 24 – MELLISH 12

Scunthorpe Women welcomed Mellish for the top of the table clash, the sun was shining and the conditions favourable for a great competition.
After the win last week against Newark, attitudes were positive and the team looked strong.
The game was quick and frantic to start with a lot of pressure being put on Mellish attacking line.
It was Scunthorpe who capitalised first from a string of penalties leading to Ewa crossing the whitewash.
Mellish not to be outdone came back with some hard lines and managed to squeeze through around the ruck area to even the scores.
Scunthorpe regrouped and began to put on the pressure at scrum/line-out time and we worked this well and this improvement gave us much better ball out the back to attack the wider channels.
The next scores came from Cassie (a quick tap penalty), Annie from a superb driving maul and Ewa in open play attack.
Mellish grabbed a consolation pick and go but the game was already won, overall a solid team performance 💚💚

2nd TEAM

LOUGHBOROUGH 47 – SCUNTHORPE 14

Scunthorpe Stags visited the Leicestershire town of Loughborough for the first time in the Counties 2 Midlands East (North) League, the score flattered Loughborough who ran out deserved winners, but the margin was probably over generous as the Stags, in the spirit of Christmas, gifted at least three tries to the opposition.

On four minutes Scunthorpe were awarded a penalty quite a way out and Jake Goodison took it on but narrowly missed, early on the Stags were playing all the rugby running some great lines and putting the bigger lads in black and gold to the sword.

Another penalty came the green way and this time they went for the ‘Bridlington’, the ball went wide and the chance went begging as Scunthorpe knocked on.

At 24 minutes, Loughborough scored a try following sustained pressure from a penalty lineout, although the defending side held strong, the referee ultimately awarded the try, which was subsequently converted, bringing the score to 7-0.

In the 27th minute, Henry Dawson converted a penalty for Scunthorpe, 7-3.

The home side increased the score to 12-3 by the 29th minute after another try.

A lapse in concentration at the 30-minute mark allowed the Loughborough prop to break through from a disrupted Scunthorpe lineout, running 40 metres unchallenged to score a converted try, extending the lead to 19-3.

By the 39th minute, Loughborough secured a controversial pushover try; despite debate regarding whether the ball was properly grounded, the referee upheld the decision, and the conversion brought the score to 26-3.

Scunthorpe have struggled to select a consistent side all season, and this game was no exception, this was compounded by injuries to the experienced Tim Dunk and youngster Kory McInnis, as half time came, coach Oldridge had to reshuffle things and brought on Kieron Riley who made a solid impact.

Half time 26-3

At 58 minutes, Rich Olddridge scored for Scunthorpe following strong build-up play and a series of penalties. Scunthorpe held their patience and the prop used his power to dive over for the five points, Henry Dawson adding the conversion, narrowing the gap to 26-10.

Scunthorpe showed a glimmer of hope.

However, further injuries and players out of position saw a period where Loughborough were scoring tries at will.

Scunthorpe’s MVP as chosen by the opposition was Coel Gosling and he scored a well deserved try to offer some hope at 33-17.

Loughborough sealed the victory with two further converted tries, the last one being a late interception in the Scunthorpe 22. Final score

Loughborough 47 Scunthorpe Stags 17.

Despite the loss as is the norm for the game of rugby union, good cheer was the order of the post-match celebrations and the excellent Christmas dinner provided by the hosts went a long way to ease the disappointment.

Scunthorpe face top of the table Mansfield next week at home before the Christmas break.

DEV TEAM

SCUNTHORPE 0 – DRIFFIELD 22

It would be a fustrating day for the home side as they faced a strong Driffield side, some last minute drop outs and some late call ups saw a few familiar faces return to the rugby pitch.

Scunthorpe put themeselves under pressure early from kick off after Driffields second row broke through the line and made 40 metres before the winger collects the ball and gets bundled into touch, from Scunthorpes lineout, a mis pass saw Driffield win the ballback and score, the away side convert and its 7-0.

Driffield will then add another try soon after, some strong carries by Driffield saw them close to the tryline and a simple overlap saw the away side score again in a matter of minutes, Driffield convert and the score is now 14-0.

Due to injuries some changes were made and increased the intensity and started to put pressure on Driffield but the home side were unable to add any scores and the first half finished 14-0.

Second half was underway and the game would become an arm wrestle between the two teams.

Scunthorpe were rewarded a scrum on Driffields 5 metre line but a misplaced pass was read by Driffield who would intercept the ball and run the full length of the pitch to score Driffields final try.

A penalty was then converted and the full time whistle was blown and it would be a disappointing day to end this Development side year going into the Christmas break.

MOTM was awarded to Matthew Henton after some dominant tackles and carries throughout the game.
