TYNEDALE 44 – SCUNTHORPE 19

Scunthorpe’s chase for survival continued with a tough trip up north to Tynedale who were also looking to seal a play off promotion spot.

Tynedale would also grab a second soon after a penalty was conceded just outside the 22 metre line, they opted to kick it into the corner and after the maul fell short, a pick and go from the scrum saw one of Tynedale’s forwards score from close range, conversion was unsuccessful and the score was now 10-0 to the host.

The second half got off to a great start for Scunthorpe who came agonisingly close to scoring, however, it would be the homeside who grabbed the first points fo the half after a scrum penalty was conceded by Scunthorpe, an overlap on the inside was created and the winger for Tynedale ran in untouched, conversion was unsuccessful and the score is now 32-10 to Scunthorpe.

WOMEN’S TEAM

SCUNTHORPE 65 – Kesteven RUFC 10

Scunthorpe Women travelled to Kesteven this week for another league game, with the wind blowing a gale the condition’s for the first half were less than favourable.
The game started at a frantic pace matching the windy conditions and each team trying to win the tackle contest, with a changed team since we last met, we knew Kesteven would come at us hard in the hits and they gained lots of ground with their quick runners.
Fortunately Scunthorpe’s defence was strong and agressive and kept them at bay.
Some excellent set up by the forwards created massive overlaps for the backs to work with, when we did keep hold of the ball we looked impressive.
Some brilliant scrummaging and great interplay with the forwards and backs allowed metres to be gained and further tries followed. Our go forward was positive, plenty of ground made each time we were in possession and our systems looked great and we built and built as the game went on, a real team performance.
We thank the opposition for their continued persistance.
The final score was 65-10 with players stepping up, showing a whole team performance!
Coaches player was Cassie Milestone for her great go forward and game tempo
Oppos player – Ewa who had a fab day around the park in attack and defence .
Players player – Annie Shearsmith , with some excellent lines of running and a try to finish off a move

2nd TEAM

SCUNTHORPE 27 – LOUGHBOROUGH 23

The Stags were keen to avenge the defeat away at Loughborough and at the same time extend their seven-match unbeaten run, they welcomed back Alfie Oldridge, Josh Duggan and Simon Fisher all of whom had a major impact on this game.

Loughborough came out of the blocks the strongest with slick backs and big strong runners in the pack, notably second rower Jack Percival, The referee awarded the visitors a penalty after three minutes for high tackle, right wing Thomas Kirkby slotted over for a three-point lead.

Two minutes later the Leicestershire outfit were given another penalty for the same offence, the ball was hoofed to the twenty-two using the strong wind and from the ensuing catch and drive lineout Loughborough crashed over for a try 0-8.

Almost from the kick-off Loughborough were back on the scoreboard, it came from a great drop kick re-start from Jake Goodison but the wind and the lack of closing down allowed Loughborough to counterattack, they broke out of their 22 and with a kick-chase followed it through for a converted try, 0-15.

Things were looking grim as the home boys could not get a grip on the game, on 24 minutes Alfie Oldridge came to the rescue as Scunthorpe were camped in the Loughborough 22, this time the penalties went the green way and through excellent ball retention and an outrageous behind the hand pass from Jake Goodison, Oldridge ran in to score under the posts with Henry Dawson converting, 7-15.

On the half hour a poor clearance kick was collected by Loughborough and their pacey full-back Will Britten scorched down the line to score in the corner, 7-20.

Scunthorpe were not going to capitulate and came right back with an excellent try from Coel Gosling. It came from a Scunthorpe scrum; the ball moved quickly out to Jake Goodison who dodged through and with another cheeky offload fed Gosling on the 22, the young centre had a lot to do with several defenders in close proximity, he used his pace and power to just get over the line, Dawson converted and the score was looking much healthier at 14-20 just as the half time whistle blew.

Scunthorpe changed ends with wind advantage in their favour, but could they utilise this better than their opponents the seal the victory?

They couldn’t quite get the accuracy right with the strong wind taking the ball dead and then allowing a Loughborough scrum back in the Scunthorpe half, however, there were signs of their opponents tiring as the strong wind and firm pitch took its toll.

From a penalty Jake Goodison got his kicking perfect and from the lineout the pack drove on for 20 metres, Guy Mychujiak and Matty Mason broke off to keep the maul going, 2 metres from the line Loughborough pulled them down and the referee had no option but to award a penalty try.

For the first time in the game the Stags had nudged ahead at 21-20, on the hour Kirkby regained the lead for his team with a penalty in front of the posts, 21-23.

Five minutes later Henry Dawson did likewise, 24-23.

The game became very taught and scrappy as two tired side were desperate to clinch the victory.

The Stags just had the edge on fitness, and their defence was terrific as Loughborough camped in their 22 sniffing for blood and the tryline.

The home side had two chances from breakouts, but they came to nothing then with five minutes to go Henry Dawson stretched the lead to four so that the opposition needed a try to win.

Loughborough came back again with penalties in the Stags 22 but once again their heroic teamwork and defence kept them at bay as they sealed the victory 27-23.

Next week Stags are on the road seeking to make it 9 wins in a row as they visit Mansfield who are in second spot and looking to win the league so it should be a thrilling encounter.

After that try the game turned into a bit of an arm wrestle in the middle of the park and the ref blew for half time with Scunthorpe taking 10-0 lead.

The second half was underway and Pocklington turned up scoring two tries to get themselves in the lead.
