WOMEN’S TEAM

SCUNTHORPE 22 – SANDAL 26

Scunthorpe Women were on the road for the first away game of 2026.
Sandal were the opposition in the 3rd Round of the community cup. From the offset we knew Sandal liked to go wide quickly and it took us a while to be able to shift across effectively. Sandals danger players once they got on the outside in space were pacey. The game itself was evenly matched with some unforced errors from both sides keeping the forwards busy in the scrum . Scunthorpes forward pack worked tirelessly all game today winning our scrum effectively and turning their scrum over too 💪🏻
Our tries came from Mags with a pick and go close to the line , Gabby with an excellent drive from a green ball to get her first try for the team . Holly G with a quick tap and go kept us in the game and finally Cassie finishing with an individual try in the corner from some broken play . Just not enough on the day to snatch the win !
Holly G was voted coaches player of the game for her tenacity and die hard attitude.
Charlie was rewarded players player for her dominant carries and hard hitting tackles . Finally oppositions player went to Cassie for her continuous efforts in attack , her tactical kicking game and a superb try to add to her tally . The final score was 26-22 in favour of Sandal . 2nd TEAM (STAGS)

SCUNTHORPE 22 – GAINSBOROUGH 5

Scunthorpe made hard work of this local league derby away at the Roses versus Gainsborough who put in a sterling performance.

Scunthorpe scored their first of four tries after four minutes. A penalty to Scunthorpe saw Henry Dawson kick to the 22 for the line out. A well taken catch saw the ball whipped out along the backs where Guy Mychujiak punched it up in the middle and then quick recycle saw Jack Rowbottom drive over, Dawson converted, 0-7.

15 minutes later Chris Murray-Auckland sored the second try, and it too came from a Gainsborough penalty. Dawson kicked to the 22 once again but this time the line out was fluffed it was stolen by Gainsborough but not cleanly. Murray was quickest to react and got his hands on the ball. He twisted and turned to just get over the whitewash. The conversion was missed 0-12.

Scunthorpe were playing well with the young front rower Murray-Auckland leading the way. The young referee then issued a puzzling yellow card to wing forward Sandhu Hakeran. Just before half time Henry Dawson scored a nifty individual try. It came from yet another home side penalty offence. This line out went well with the ball been moved wide, Sam Valentino boshed it up in the middle and with a quick rewind Dawson showed a clever dummy fooling the defence to open a gap which he strolled through to score. Dawson then converted his own try and at half time the Stags had a commanding lead of 0-17.

The Stags had developed a very effective strategy which seemed to bring them the rewards they deserved. If previous form was anything to go by it was expected that in the second period Scunthorpe would go on to win by a convincing score. However, the second half did not live up to the promise, mainly due to the home side who tackled hard to upset the Stags pattern. Also, the visiting players themselves did not cover themselves in glory as they took too many wrong decisions and committed several unforced errors.

On the hour Elliot Saltmarsh scored a good team try. It was a Gainsborough lineout the ball was tapped back, and it was bobbling all over the place. A Gainsborough player tried to relieve his lines, but Guy Mychujiak charged down the kick, and it ended up with a scrum to Scunthorpe. The pack pushed their opposition all the way to the line Saltmarsh kept control of the ball at number eight thus claiming the touchdown, Henry Dawson missed the conversion, 0-22.

The game fizzled out somewhat with both sides struggling to put any consistent phases together. A try to Gainsborough five minutes from the end gave them some cheer and the game ended with a convincing win for the Stags with a five-point bonus.

Next week the Stags travel to West Bridgford 2nd team to play a rearranged league game.
