TUPTON 6 – SCUNTHORPE STAGS 14
Scunthorpe secured a well-earned win at Tupton in the RFU Counties 2 Midlands East (North) League, handling the muddy conditions more effectively.
It was Tupton that scored first with a penalty from fly half Sam Cooper after 3 minutes.
Five minutes later Henry Dawson slotted over a three-pointer to draw level at 3-3.
Both sides struggled to use the ball to their strengths as they battled with the muddy conditions. Cooper missed another penalty chance on the 15-minute mark, Both teams were playing very competitively with Guy Mychujiak busy on the rampage, As the half time whistle blew it seemed as if both sides had cancelled each other out in what was a very dull 40 minutes.
Half time score 3-3.
Shortly after the break the Tupton fly half Cooper converted another simple 3-point penalty to nudge 6-3 ahead.
This was not an afternoon for running rugby Scunthorpe needed to keep the ball tight, stop throwing out silly passes and play the conditions.
On 44 minutes Henry Dawson kicked for a three-point penalty as the Stags drew level again, five minutes later he repeated the feat to put his side into the lead for the first time at 6-9.
The Stags were beginning to realise the way to beat their oppos as they started to play a tighter game and adapted to the conditions, Scunthorpe advanced through effective play between the forwards and backs, but a knock-on near the 22 ended their opportunity.
Cam Christer was having a good game on his first full start for some time only to be sent to the bin by the referee for an innocuous comment.
A few changes in the pack saw the Stags begin to dominate the Tupton scrum and this gave them the impetus to go on to win the game, the winning try came on 68 minutes from replacement Will Dale.
Scunthorpe had finally got to grips with the conditions making simple offloads forwards and backs not going more than about two or three yards from each other. This worked a great effect as they worked the way down the field, Billy Hardy made a brilliant break, the skipper raced from the 22-metre line ball to within three metres, the ball was quickly recycled and Dale crashed over crashed over to score, the conversion went wide but the Stags were now two scores ahead at 6-14.
Tupton came back looking to redress the balance, but the green defence held tight and ran out deserved winners 6-14.
The players adjusted to the conditions, and their teamwork proved effective. Next week, the Stags visit Notts Casuals, aiming to avenge their recent NLD Cup loss.
