SCUNTHORPE 18 – HULL IONIANS 24
The Greens had a few changes this week with Nick Dyson returning after more retirements than Frank Sinatra, in for Dan Gilbert who played a full game for the RAF on Wednesday, Dan Longden retained his place for the injured Marcus Payne. In the backs Ethan Taylor returned at 10 while the Ethan Heath-Drury moved to fullback. On a blustery day at Heslam Park with the wind blowing across the field Ionians kicked off towards the Queensway end. Ionians were soon on the attack but a mistake by them saw the Greens break out and only a try saving tackle by Ionians 5m from their line prevented the Greens getting off to a flying start. Ionians cleared their lines but were eventually penalised for killing the ball in midfield. The Greens kick for the corner and from a well rehearsed catch & drive from the line out, Nick Dyson to goes over the line for the first try, a cracking conversion by Ethan Taylor from near the touch line makes the score.

The Green win the line out and with a catch & drive go through the phases before eventually losing the ball forward and from the ensuing Ionians scrum, clear their lines just outside their 22.
Scunthorpe continued their impressive start, moving the ball well between the pack and backs, and it was only over-eagerness that cost them when a couple of scoring opportunities arose. Ionians again were penalised and the Greens opt for the kick at posts. Ethan Taylor converts the penalty bringing the score to,
Scunthorpe 13 Ionians 5 at half time.

The heavens the opened and with the weather deteriorating the game became somewhat of a lottery. The score remained the same to the end and but for the Greens over eagerness to keep the ball moving, saw their chance of a win go. Consistency is the watchword and go to Lightfoot Green Lane to play Preston Grasshoppers next week still looking for their 1st win.

2nd TEAM (STAGS)
SYSTON 2NDS 91 – SCUNTHORPE STAGS 12
The Stags faced a tough encounter at Barkby Road, Syston as the home side had amassed a total of over 200 points in their first two league games. This task was even more daunting with late cry offs and players playing out of position.
Scunthorpe started well and used the strong wind to their advantage with an exchange of penalties in the early few minutes. However, on three minutes a converted try from the Syston fly half set the tone for the afternoon as he stepped through the defence and scored easily under posts, 7-0.
Five minutes later the second try came through the very well drilled and highly efficient Syston back line, 14-0.
Scunthorpe responded bravely with a well taken try from experienced prop Jack Rowbottom. It came from a penalty, Jake Goodison put the ball into the 22 and the catch and drive lineout worked a treat. Captain Jack peeled off with the ball and with a robust drive scored the touchdown. Henry Dawson narrowly missed the conversion, 14-5.
Syston scored again and their superior backs were now running amok. Things went from bad to worse on 20 minutes when young Dante had to leave the field with an injury. To add insult to injury James Lovell received a yellow card for an innocuous high tackle. On the half-hour, a great try came from speed merchant Troy Edwards. Jake Goodison marshalled the backs in his usual forthright style. Cole Gosling made the try as he trapped the ball football style from a deep Syston penalty punt into the Scunthorpe half. The young winger picked up the ball and ran at the opposition defence. Great back up play from his teammates allowed second phase ball which Goodison moved rapidly wide. Edwards finished in style rounding his man to score with Henry Dawson converting, with the score now 28-12 The Greens were still in the game. However, Syston scored two more converted tries before half time to lead 42-12 at the break.
If Scunthorpe could keep the ball away from the opposition backs and work together, they could surely rescue a bonus point by scoring four tries. Scunthorpe came out of half with some good play and held on for quarter of an hour but then three converted tries in the space of six minutes killed off any chance of a revival. It was plain to see why this exceptional side had scored an average of over 100 points per game so far and it was obvious that they were far and away the best side that Scunthorpe had played thus far in the league. The Stags’ heads went down, and it was inevitable that more points would come.
With the score at 77-12 Scunthorpe showed some spirit and pressed the line, forwards and backs carrying well but as the final pass went astray the chance went begging. Not too disheartened they came back again and asked questions of the defence. Good driving runs from Josh Duggan and some determined running from Charlie Aitkenhead gave the boys some encouragement. Young Adam Wilson also made a good impression coming off the bench. Scunthorpe got to the line and in the act of stretching over to claim the touchdown the ball went forward. To rub salt into the wound the Syston scrum half scooped up the ball and went the length of the field to score under the posts. A further converted try finished off a bruising afternoon and although the Stags expected a tough game they did not think they would come up against such a good 2nd team side.
They must put this behind them and work hard in training to prepare for the local derby versus Gainsborough at Heslam Park next week. Hopefully they will have key players back playing in their natural positions.

DEVS
SCUNTHORPE 20 – HULL IONIANS 10
Scunthorpe arrived at Ionians before the opposition wondering if the game was going ahead. With storm Amy attacking England the conditions were not considered ideal and Scunthorpe decided to attack into the wind knowing it was a 10-14 point wind if used right. Ionians started the game well pinning Scunthorpe in their own 22 for the first 10 minutes of the game but great tackling and discipline stopped the attack from crossing the whitewash. Scunthorpe enjoyed a period of possession using the forwards to carry the ball creating the gaps for the backs to exploit and camping in the Ionians 22. After a knock on by Scunthorpe, scrum to Ionians and a clearance by their fly half down the throat of the Devs 15, little did they know he had the pace of road runner escaping Wile E. Coyote, Cameron Ogg ran the ball round the defence to go over for Scunthorpe’s first try (Storm Amy stopping the conversion). 20 minutes of a back and forth between the two side, Ionians managed to break through the defence to score a try themselves which then led to a half time score of 5-5.
The second half started with Scunthorpe piling the pressure onto the hosts but failing to exploit the dominance. Strong running from Ionians allowed for a brief period of game play inside the Scunthorpe 22 but strong tackles and great rucking left Scunthorpe coming out on top preventing any scores. A great platform from the Scunthorpe forwards allowed the fly half to make a break and put a clearance kick in to the flying fullback Cam Ogg to chase down, supported by the rest of the back line to give quick ball for Lloyd Akers to run the ball in (as well as running back the years) to give Scunthorpe a 10-5 lead, unfortunately storm Amy came out victorious again for an unsuccessful conversion.
Scunthorpe’s tails were up and continued to attack, but after some slow reaction to a penalty and a quick tap by the opposition scrum half the hosts ran in a second try bringing the game level 10-10.
10 minutes to go and The Devs wanted to continue their unbeaten run, great forward play, carrying the ball hard won a penalty, and after a calm head (correctly and forcefully) pointed out the position Fell slotted over the penalty to give Scunthorpe a 13-10 lead. The game opened up slightly with good play by both teams, a strip in the tackle by Scunthorpe allowed Rick Robbo to put boot to ball, Robbie Johnston chasing like a man possessed (and showing his excellent footballing skills) put the ball down for Scunthorpe’s 3rd try, this time converted. Score 20-10 giving the Devs the win!
Well played by everyone on the park, big hand to Finlay Storrs playing flank and wing and coming out as MoM. Onto next week.
