Match report –

West Bridgford v Scunthorpe 05.11.22.

They say that lightening does not strike the same place twice. -wrong. For the second consecutive week the Greens lost a key player in the pre-match warm up. In this case, unlike last week, they were away from home so no replacement from the third team was at hand.

In spite of this the Scunthorpe side began the brightest moving the ball well and stretching the home defence and it was no surprise when Kane Linklater, running a line that any centre would be proud of, broke the West Bridgford line and put in a grub kick that a speeding Liam Brunt grounded for the games’ opening try which was converted by Josh Clarke.

From the restart the home side showed what they could do and the Greens failed to exit when they had the chance. The sustained pressure finally resulted in the overlapping Edan Kelly opening the home sides’ scoring with a try in the corner.

The Greens came back, the line out was working well, and the visitors’ attack forced a penalty that Josh Clarke converted.

Again, the momentum swung back to the home side when aggressive counter rucking give them possession that resulted in a penalty that Ben Dickinson converted.

A powerful set scum gave the Greens the next chance and Colin Chapman jinked his way superbly past three would be tacklers to score a second try for the visitors. Although the West Bridgford side pressed hard the Scunthorpe defence held to leave the half time score 8-15 to the visitors.

The Greens started the second half well and desperate home defence resulted in them ‘killing’ ruck ball and a yellow card for Joe McMenemie

Contrary to expectations this sparked a purple patch for home team. A penalty, followed by a deep touch kick and a good and sustained catch and drive saw scum half Alex Smith score a try converted by Ben Dickinson. Further West Bridgford pressure brought a yellow card for Rory Rendell Tyrell when he was judges to have foul tackled. Just when the visitors seemed to be rallying Josh Bird suffered a foot injury and left the fray.

Now clearly in charge, winning scrums and line outs, the home side mounted a sustained arrack that ended with Alex Wilson over in the corner for a converted try and another, unconverted, by flanker Luke Risman. The Greens never gave up but their efforts were tired and desperate.

A further penalty left the final score 30- 15

Again, after a good first half, injuries and lack of full match fitness produced a poor second period. The crisis of availability that causes this has yet to be resolved. There are some hopeful signs -the good debut today by colt Lewis Talbert and the physios report some of the injured are near returning. However, it seems as fast as these Green shoots’ appear other injuries and problems emerge. We await the turn of the tide.

Scunthorpe 3’s v Pockllington 3’s.

This week saw us face undefeated top of the table Pocklington.

We knew we was gonna be in for a battle,

We kicked off and Luke Murray caught crashed in and couple of phases saw Joshua Samuels skip over in the corner.

First try in under a minute.

Everyone grew an inch with pride, the greens never let up and we took the game to pock.

Some good quality rugby played,

Pock was no slouches and they fought every inch.

Every man today played like it was his last game.

And come the final whistle we ended the Victor’s

31-21

MOM too hard to pick 1, Ash Grey and Sam Proctor annihilated all. Well deserved

Special mention to the murray/price clan. Told this is the first time all 5 have ever played all together.

Great to see luke and Tyler Price back at home with the green machine.

Tries

Josh Samuels x 1

YORK RI Women v Scunthorpe Women

Forward of the match: Jodie Britcliffe

Back of the match: Jorja Lyons

Oppositions player: Ewa Jasek

Scunthorpe made the trip across to York RI  this week returning to league action. After a lacklustre warm up, Captain Becky Clark had a few choice words of encouragement before the ladies came out for their contact warm up. This seemed to get the greens back in the game zone for the start of the match . Both sides using their forward runners to progress past the gain line. Scunthorpe were much improved in their pressing defensive line and in turn resulted in York RI making some early mistakes that Scunthorpe could capitalise on. Cassie Milestone with one of her usual runs allowing Ewa Jasek to cross for the first of her two tries. York RI would not roll over easily and some ill discipline by Scunthorpe allowed them back into contention and we needed everyone to step up and make their tackles. Tries continued to flow as the game progressed and the excellent forward platform that was set allowed good clean ball for the backs. Jorja Lyons having an inspiring game at 9 constantly worked hard and provided the pivotal link between the forwards and backs. Further tries from Becky x 2 Ella Nutbrown x 2 Jorja x1 and another from Ewa giving her a brace. Cassie orchestrated the backs well today and converted 4 of the tries. The final score was 43-17 to Scunthorpe who thoroughly deserved their first league win 💚🖤
